Unleash your musical prowess with the best music lessons in Perth!

  • Experience - We picked music schools with instructors who have more than three years of experience in music education.
  • Facility - We prefer those that have well-maintained instruments, practice rooms, and performance spaces. We also checked whether they keep their class sizes low to ensure each student gets the attention they deserve.
  • Accessibility - We looked at whether these schools are near major roads and public transit stations. We also considered whether they can accommodate new students any day of the year.
  • Professionalism - We evaluated whether their instructors always treat their students respectfully. We also assessed whether they respond quickly to enquiries.
  • Price fairness - We also looked at whether their prices are fair considering their instructors’ experience, facilities, class sizes, and location.

Over the past few months, my niece has discovered a profound passion for the piano. As a proud and supportive uncle, I was thrilled to help her further explore this newfound love.

Enrolling her in a music school seemed like the perfect step. And it paid off! Within weeks, she was playing with the finesse of a seasoned musician. She often tells me that these lessons are the best gift I’ve ever given her!

I hope the following excellent local music schools can also help you nurture the musician with you!

For those who are looking to take their music talents to a professional level, Player1 Music School is worth checking out. Founded in 2014 by Michael de Grussa and Amanda Porrins, this family-run school offers a range of music lessons, including piano, guitar, ukulele, bass guitar, drums, and singing.

Aside from the usual lessons, they also have specialised programs for students preparing for auditions at the Guildford Grammar School of Music (GATE) and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Another thing that caught my eye is their AMPLIFY Band program, led by professional musician Jeremias Sosa. This exclusive class is crafted to equip students with the skills and confidence needed to perform on the big stage.

One thing to keep in mind is that Player1 can sometimes be slow in responding to enquiries, so it might take up to 24 hours to get a reply.

Pros

  • 10 years of experience
  • Special programs for GATE and WAAPA audition preparations
  • Has a special class for aspiring performers
  • Offers trial lessons

Cons

  • May take 24 hours to respond to enquiries
  • New student slots are extremely limited

Fantastic music school

“Fantastic music school. My boys both have piano lessons and their teacher is amazing and constantly inspiring my boys. I am constantly amazed at what they achieve with her help. The place itself is welcoming and fun for all ages. Computer games galore to keep the kids and parents busy around lessons. Great coffee made at the cafe with Michael and Amanda, the owners always welcoming and helpful. Totally a place you should check out. The kids will love it. They even do birthday parties.”

I don’t need to ask our son to practice, he just wants to

“They teach to love the art of playing first, then the theory. I don’t need to ask our son to practice, he just wants to, most mornings a little too early!”

School of Rock is an international music school that operates in many locations across Australia. They established their Perth branch in 2016 and are now one of the city’s biggest providers of music lessons to both young and adults.

Currently, they offer lessons for guitar, drums, singing, bass guitar, and piano. What’s interesting is that they’ve also branched out to other fields of music, as they offer songwriting lessons as well.

It’s also worth mentioning that they’ve developed their own teaching style called the School of Rock Method. It uses a combination of stage performances, song-based learning, and a mobile app to improve students’ musical proficiency quickly.

Unfortunately, most of their classes tend to get filled quickly. I strongly recommend you enquire weeks ahead so you can reserve a slot as soon as one is available.

Pros

  • 8 years of experience
  • Offers songwriting lessons
  • Has a unique teaching method
  • Has music camps and workshops

Cons

  • New student slots are extremely limited
  • Above-average prices

School of Rock is the quickest way to learn band craft

“I played 4 terms with School of Rock, starting as a complete novice on bass. I’m now playing with my own “garage” band – all thanks to the School or Rock Adults band program. If you don’t mind a challenge and being thrown in the deep end, School of Rock is the quickest way to learn band craft – your instrument, locking in with the others – drums, bass, guitar, keys, vocals. And with a first gig and the end of the term to aim for… I was just amazed that I could go from nothing to playing a whole hour set within a year and a bit, and not only enjoying it but making a huge group of new mates along the way. Dom and the team at School of Rock, especially music teachers Chris, Matt and Angus, do an amazing job of getting adults into the music experience. And you get to play songs you love, and to love a whole love of new songs.”

Learning to play an instrument has never been this much fun

“Our three boys and myself have thoroughly enjoyed the excellent variety of programmes the School of Rock offers – there is something there for everyone, from beginner musician to more accomplished, from child to adult. The music lessons in combination with band practice – plus songs you really want to play! – meaning that we are always motivated to practise. All the teachers make the lessons both challenging and fun, and owners Dom and Claire could not make you feel any more welcome and supported. Learning to play an instrument has never been this much fun, and band practice is always a highlight of our week! The passion for music at the School of Rock shines through in all they do. We love it!”

The music school I enrolled my niece in is Focus Music, located in Gooseberry Hill. It has been around for a decade and offers music lessons for piano, guitar, ukulele, drums, singing, violin, and more.

One of the main reasons I chose them is their use of the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) syllabus in all their lessons. This prestigious system, with its detailed grading from 1 to 8, helps students build a strong technical foundation, theoretical knowledge, and performance skills.

Another perk is their loyalty program. Students who have been enrolled for at least 12 months receive a 10% discount on all their lessons. They even offer family discounts, which is fantastic for those wanting to learn music alongside their siblings!

My only issue is the location. It’s a bit far from most of Perth’s western suburbs.

Pros

  • 10 years of experience
  • Uses the AMEB syllabus
  • Has a loyalty program
  • Offers family discounts

Cons

  • Location a bit far from Perth’s western suburbs

Great environment for kids to nurture their musical and artistic talents!

“Great environment for kids to nurture their musical and artistic talents! Shout out to Daniel Wiggins, Greg Barnett and Daryl Eagle for guiding my son James on electric guitar and band. For keeping his interest alive, nurturing his talent and pushing him to play some great music. And Pete’s been a great addition to the band programme on Wednesdays this term. Really loving his energy, which I witnessed at the concert today!

Wonderful to have the school in Forrestfield where I hope they will stay for a long time yet! I think it’s great that they run their classes at Forrestfield Primary School where they have ample room and the students can play to their heart’s content!”

Michael Jelinek Music Tuition is a good choice for anyone keen on not just making music but truly enhancing their musical skills. This school was founded by Michael Jelinek, an independent music teacher who has decades of experience working as a sound engineer for popular artists like Benjamin Witt and Grace Sanders.

Whether you’re eager to strum the guitar, bang on the drums, or finesse your ukulele skills, Michael has a class for you. He even delves into music theory and composition, perfect for anyone wanting to deepen their musical understanding.

And for those interested in the technical side of music, he offers lessons on the latest recording and sound mixing software.

However, because Michael is the sole teacher at his school, it can be challenging to book a lesson with him due to high demand.

Pros

  • More than 20 years of experience
  • Teaches music theory and composition
  • Offers sound mixing and recording lessons

Cons

  • Solo teacher
  • Tends to get fully booked quickly

It might come as a surprise, but Crescendo Music, a well-known musical instrument store, has expanded its offerings to include music lessons! They boast an impressive team of seasoned musicians who provide expert instruction.

Their comprehensive lessons cover a range of instruments, including violin, piano, electric guitar, ukulele, and clarinet.

One thing I like is their willingness to teach students of all ages. They adhere to the rigorous standards of the AMEB and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) curricula to ensure students achieve proficiency in their chosen instruments.

Additionally, as a musical instrument store, they offer instrument servicing and repairs. For those without their own instruments, they provide convenient instrument hire services.

However, it’s worth noting that their lesson fees are on the higher side, so exploring other options might be prudent if you have a limited budget.

Pros

  • Offers early childhood music courses
  • Uses AMEB and ABRSM curricula
  • Offers instrument servicing and repairs
  • Has instrument hire services

Cons

  • Above-average prices
  • Location a bit far from Perth’s northern suburbs

In 1 term he has learnt more than an entire year at the old school

“We’ve moved from another music school as my son was rapidly losing interest and after 1 lesson his interest came right back. Having the right teacher to motivate you is so important. In 1 term he has learnt more than an entire year at the old school. He enjoys himself and even practices without being asked to. I’m really grateful to have found Crescendo by first stumbling across their music book shop.”
