The Best Steak Sandwiches in Perth—Hearty & Flavourful Slices Between Buns!

If you ask us, a Perth eatery is better when there’s a steak sandwich on the cards. Charred outside and savoury to the core, it’s a recipe for stardom.

Good thing that steak sarnie-less pubs or restos are super rare in this city. The only dilemma is figuring out which ones top the rest.

No need to Google endlessly, pal. The answers to that burning question are right below!

Picabar

From so.ungraceful

Address: Perth Cultural Centre, 51 James St, Northbridge
Contact Details: +61 8 9228 8769
Operating Hours: Daily – 11 am to 12 am
Website

Tucking into a steak sarnie in Picabar’s courtyard is how you nail a brunch. It’s no-fuss but delicious and hearty, with melt-in-your-mouth Scotch fillet and a garlicky kick from the aioli.

If that weren’t enough, there’s lots of cracking bacon in there and a dollop of sticky onion jam for that caramelised profile. Golden chips then mop up all that flavour, all for just 24 bucks!

Tip: Picabar is dog-friendly, so you’re welcome to bring pups here.

The Iluka

From theiluka

Address: 98 O’Mara Blvd, Iluka
Contact Details: +61 419 269 472
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – 11:30 am to 10 pm
  • Fri to Sat -11:30 am to 12 am
  • Sun – 11:30 am to 10 pm

Website

The Iluka bagged AHA WA’s Best Steak Sandwich title last 2023, and naturally, we had to see if it was worth the plaque. Safe to say, their sanga has been living rent-free in our heads ever since!

Juicy Black Angus fillet and peppery rocket bring the bold umami and peppery flavours, while a splash of cognac peppercorn sauce puts in the heat. There are also sweet notes from grilled onions, all hugged by an airy Turkish roll and served with hand-cut chips.

Tip: They throw a lot of parties here. Check their Insta to catch one you like!

Hillarys Beach Club

Address: 20 John Wilkie Tarn, Hillarys
Contact Details: +61 8 6285 5260
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Wed – 8 am to 10 pm
  • Thu – 8 am to 11 pm
  • Fri to Sat – 7 am to 11:45 pm
  • Sun – 7 am to 10 pm

Website

Hillary’s Beach Club’s coastal scenery and seafood weren’t the only reason we swung by; their steak sandwich was a major draw too! Sure, it’s not your classic take, but the Wagyu’s buttery marbling and caramelisation had the approval of even our purists.

The mushroom sauce brought earthy goodness, while stacks of parmesan infused the bite with a salty-nutty character. Pairing it with Amelia Park Cab Merlot was also a brilliant move, as the wine’s silky tannins and dark berry notes balanced everything.

Tip: The place is walk-in only, so it’s best to get there early if you want the prime seats.

Palette

From palettefreo

Address: 1 Freeman Loop, North Fremantle
Contact Details: +61 8 9335 4159
Operating Hours:

  • Tue to Thu – 6 am to 4 pm
  • Fri to Sat – 6 am to 9 pm
  • Sun – 7 am to 4 pm

Website

Freo’s food scene has a few heavy hitters in terms of steak sammies, and Palette belongs to the top. Just keep an open mind, as this sun-soaked resto threw the rulebook when they made their version.

The star of their quirky sandwich is a tender, grass-fed striploin that’s lean but packed with beefy essence. It’s made all crispy and golden with a crown of chips and sharp pecorino, then drizzled in salsa verde for a herby zing that brightens each bite!

Tip: If you’re not a fan of crowds, 3 pm is your sweet spot to visit.

The Wray Hotel

From thewrayhotelfreo

  • Thu – 11 am to 10:30 pm
  • Fri to Sat – 11 am to 11:30 pm
  • Sun – 11 am to 9 pm

Website

If you’re after a chill, family-friendly spot, The Wray Hotel is the place to be. Not only is it award-winning, but their Moondyne Joe’s Steak Sandwich also gets a lot of love from both locals and tourists!

The meat is Black Angus, so you can expect very buttery flavours and evenly distributed fat, all made sharper by caramelised bacon. Extra smoky and sweet flavours are also provided by dijonnaise and BBQ sauce, making this $26 worth every penny.

Tip: Swing from 5 pm to 6 pm on weekdays for $8 beers.

Carringtons Bar & Grill

From carringtons_bar_grill

Address: 330 Carrington St, Hamilton Hill

  • Thu – 11 am to 10 pm
  • Fri – 11 am to 12 am
  • Sat – 9 am to 11 pm
  • Sun – 11 am to 9:30 pm

Website

If you somehow missed it, Carringtons Bar & Grill snagged AHA’s Best Steak Sandwich Award in 2024. We had a go at their sammie, so we know it’s no bloody fluke.

It was a balanced indulgence, with the Scotch fillet softened and paired with cheesy bacon. The game-changers were the nutty romesco and bourbon-toffee onions—sweet and slightly boozy additions that gave the meat and rocket sauce extra depth.

Tip: They host plenty of raffles here, with all the details posted on their Instagram.

Nic and Kolo

From nicandkolo

Address: 45 Ardross St, Applecross
Contact Details: +61 8 9364 9496
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Tue – 7 am to 3 pm
  • Wed to Sat – 7 am to 3 pm, 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm
  • Sun – 7 am to 3 pm

Website

Nic and Kolo’s spin on the steak sanga is all class. Cooked medium rare, the Margaret River Scotch fillet has natural juices and a cleaner flavour with soft buttery nuances.

A bright lift comes from the chimichurri too, though it takes a backseat to the Swiss cheese, aioli, and rocket. The pane di casa also pulls its weight; it’s soft but sturdy, so you can bite it all without the sarnie turning into a soggy mess.

Tip: Call the number above to book your table. Their social media platforms don’t handle bookings.

The Local Hotel

From thelocalhotel

Address: 282 South Terrace, South Fremantle
Contact Details: +61 8 6219 5510
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Fri – 11 am to 12 am
  • Sat to Sun – 9 am to 12 am

Website

The pace is leisurely at The Local Hotel, especially if you’re finishing a glass of rose and unfussy steak sandwich while people-watching.

Their take features bacon chutney and potatoes, which enhances the bad boy with unapologetic tastes that go well with spiced aioli and fried onions. To tone down these strong elements, tart apple slaw is tossed between the cloudy rolls.

Tip: You’ll find the car park at the hotel’s rear, and access is off Charles Street.

U N ME COOGEE

From unmecoogee

Address: 180 Hamilton Rd, Spearwood
Contact Details: +61 423 152 995
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – 6:30 am to 2 pm
  • Fri – 6:30 am to 9 pm
  • Sat to Sun – 7 am to 3 pm

Website

We were all over U N ME COOGEE’s woodsy looks and live tunes, but it was their down-to-earth steak sandwich that had us sold. Caramelised red onions, fresh tomato, and a cheeky side of chips—it was simple but spot on.

What really got us going was the medium-rare Black Angus rib eye, cooked just right on the outside and velvety inside. Using ciabatta was a solid choice too, as the bread was thick and crunchy enough to hold even the melted cheese.

Tip: For live music, head over on a Friday.

Percy Flint

From percyflintsouthfreo

Percy Flint is where you want to be if you’re craving a straightforward steak sandwich, cold beers, and boho vibes. Plus, this haunt is dog-friendly and has a casual alfresco setup, ideal for fur parents or anyone who loves a good outdoor feed.

As for the sandwich, it’s simplicity at its finest. Think tender scotch fillet, sweet caramelised onions, and fresh rocket. Mouthwatering chips are also included.

  • Fri to Sat – 11:30 am to 12 am

Website

Waterfront dining hits the mark at The Royal on the Waterfront. The oysters are fresh off the boat, the wine list is a corker, and their steak sandwich is among Perth’s best.

Speaking of the sarnie, there’s no fuss with this one, which makes it ace. You get 150 grams of well-seasoned rump steak, Swiss cheese, and farm-fresh greens. What more do you need?

Tip: They stream live sports here. Check out their schedule to avoid missing the action!

Samuels on Mill

From samuelsrestaurant

Address: 14 Mill St
Contact Details: +61 8 9215 2422
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Fri – 6:30 am to 12 am
  • Sat to Sun – 7 am to 12 am

Website

Old-world wine and fresh WA produce get the spotlight at Samuels on Mill. That means you can wash down a sirloin steak sandwich with a fruit-forward Venetian prosecco.

The wine is non-negotiable in our opinion. You need something fruity and fresh to sweeten up the $32 sandwich’s striking beef, sharp cheddar, and smoky BBQ overtones.

Tip: Sunday is a great time to visit, but remember that a 10% surcharge applies. Factor that into your budget before driving over.

Seven Sins

From sevensinsperthhills

Address: Brackenridge Village, 1 Soldiers Rd, Roleystone
Contact Details: +61 8 6290 5162
Operating Hours:

  • Wed to Thu – 5 pm to 10 pm
  • Fri to Sun – 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, 5 pm to 10 pm

Website

Seven Sins’ contemporary food racks 5-star reviews for delicious reasons. Their fillet steak sandwich is no exception, thanks to its tested bacon, beef, and cheese combo.

The edge is the lighter but crunchier shoestring fries offered along the sandwich. If that’s enough, you also get to enjoy Perth Hill’s greens and serenity, particularly during the golden hour.

Tip: It’s not just the steak sandwich that stands out; their wedding packages are equally impressive.

Blasta Collective

From blastacollective

Address: 102 Goodwood Pde., Burswood
Contact Details: +61 428 291 562
Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Wed – 11:30 am to 10 pm
  • Thu – 11 am to 10 pm
  • Fri to Sat – 11 am to 12 pm
  • Sun – 11 am to 10 pm

Website

Blasta Collective is a top dog for robust and lip-smacking steak sandwiches. They’re also among the cheapest, as we got a whopper of a meal for 28 bucks.

Our first bite sank into juicy rump steak with crunchy lettuce, rounded off by malty accents from the spent-grain ciabatta. A slight bitterness from the beer-braised onions and the sharpness of red cheddar also gave the sandwich some real character.

Tip: Kiddos are more than welcome here. They even have a playground!

C.Y. O’Connor Village Pub rose like a phoenix from the ashes after the 2021 fire. Unlike the mythical bird, though, they didn’t just rise; they brought back a legendary Maleuka Farm steak some considered to be one of Perth’s greatest!

The sandwich’s beef is known for its full-bodied umami flavour and low-melting fat, a win for the health-conscious steak fanatics. Even its spiced and chewy Turkish panini roll is a flavour bomb on its own!
