What to Do

Sweat it out at Picasso Park

From movehomes

Address: Picasso Prom

Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours

Picasso Park, stretching over 2.5 hectares, had us scratching our heads about where to start. It has something for the kids and us big kids, from a bird’s nest swing to a few workout gear.

Eventually, the littlies spent hours at the sun-safe, two-storey play area teeming with brand-new slides and creative climbing structures. Meanwhile, we hit the full-size basketball court that has fancy glass backboards and netball rings at the back!

Take a dip and have a picnic on Alkimos Beach

From alkimos.beach

Address: Alkimos

Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours

Alkimos Beach was at the top of the list when we planned this getaway, and we’ll gladly say it delivered. The 3-km stretch of untouched white sand and sparkling shallows was *chef’s kiss.*

We spent the arvo splashing about, with the less than 1-metre wave making it smooth sailing all around. Firing up the barbie was simple too, thanks to the BBQ facilities on the northern beach access, which also doubled as a grassy picnic spot!

Let the kids play at Eden Beach Foreshore Park

From kristi_n_corr

Address: Aurora Esplanade

Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours

The spotless Eden Beach Foreshore Park was a winner with the little ones. They went wild on the multi-level play cubes, assorted climbing nets, and the toddler play area, all boasting opportunities for creative play.

Even better, the playground has an unobstructed view of the beach. Shade was a bit lacking, though—but no worries, there are covered picnic shelters with BBQs nearby, perfect for a post-play feed.

Bike or play cricket at Leatherback Park

From jontyscc

Address: Alkimos

Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours

Even though the sun was blazing, Leatherback Park was still an absolute belter, especially since we came with bikes and cricket gear. Sure, the pitch might’ve been a bit undersized, but the kiddos didn’t seem to mind one bit; after all, it was clean and uncrowded.

The 1.3 km to 1.8 km bike track was also terrific. Its trails, marked with arrows and lanes, taught our kids about pedestrian/bike travel safety and skills. A bit more shade wouldn’t hurt, though!

See the shipwreck at Shorehaven Beach

Our Shorehaven Beach visit kicked off mellow. We splashed about in the shallows and had a picnic on the grassy stretch. Things became more thrilling, though, when we decided to dive into the supposedly haunted Alkimos Wreck, sitting about 320 metres offshore.

The dive wasn’t daunting depth-wise—only 4 metres where we went, which was fortunate since it can hit 7. However, visibility was slightly murky, so we decided to view its ruins from a safe distance to avoid poking into something.

The Landing’s big cheese steak sandwich easily solved our pub grub cravings. At $29, it was a heavyweight in flavour and portions. Think crispy Turkish panini, bold as porterhouse, and hefty toppings like sharp cheddar and earthy mushrooms.

Their authentic Korean fried chicken was a close second, dunked in sweet-spicy sauce and best washed with in-house ciders. As for the kiddos, chicken tenders with chips are an easy call.

Perched on the Shorehaven Estate, Oceans 27 is a no-brainer for seafood lovers after coastal panoramas. Their fish and chips, fried to golden perfection, sell most, while the sharply seasoned squid, balanced by piquillo pepper salad, follows.

We legged it to Alkimos Café & Grill for one big reason—their famous handcrafted burgers. The smoky-savour brekkie burger alone was worth every kilometre, as the addition of bacon rashers took the umami kick to another level.

The surprise standout, though, was their egg benny in a pillowy bun. Its gooey eggs were bang on, and the buttery, tangy hollandaise tied all the flavours, including the crisp earthiness of the greens.

If you’re chasing something a bit exotic in the heart of sweet Alkimos, drop a pin on 2 Fat Indians. Their buttered chicken is a creamy, spiced masterpiece that’ll make you wonder why it took you so long to stop by.

You can’t miss the goat curry either, hitting all the right notes with its slow-cooked meat in an earthy-fragrant sauce. It’s not too intense, but you can expect a layer of heat, which can be tamed by a fluffy naan.

Speaking of bold and fiery flavours, Becha Malaysian Cuisine, will spice up your Alkimos escapade, one dish at a time. Their seafood or chicken mee goreng is a great example, with its stir-fried noodles flavoured by robust aromatics and sharp soy sauce.

If you’re feeling a bit more daring, the Malaysian chicken curry is a better move. It’s a coconut-based stew with tender chicken on the bone, which only gets better if coupled with the smoothie-ish mango lassi.
