With how long I lived in Perth, I often forget how amazing our historical attractions are. Take, for example, Fremantle Markets, which has been around since 1897 and is still one of the most active marketplaces in our city.
It features an eclectic mix of over 150 stalls where you can buy almost anything, from fresh produce and gourmet treats to handcrafted goods and souvenirs. There are even street performers here who’ll keep your day bright and interesting.
To make your visit here more enjoyable, I’ve put together a quick guide to Fremantle Markets. Get ready to fill your bags and lighten your wallets, as it’s nearly impossible to leave this place empty-handed!

What to Do and See in Fremantle Markets
Enjoy live entertainment

One of the best things about Fremantle Markets is the live entertainment. Whenever I visit here on a sunny weekend, I usually see many buskers who add a bit more life and fun to the hustle and bustle of the marketplace.
That includes some talented artists like Ashleigh Smith, an excellent guitarist with amazing vocals to match. Other noteworthy artists I love watching here are pianist Haruka Smyth and singer Oliveye.
Of course, the performers aren’t only musicians. I sometimes see magicians wowing the crowd with magic acts and dance groups showcasing their talents in the Market Lane.
Join the History Trail Tour

With the Fremantle Markets being one of Perth’s oldest structures still standing today, it certainly has a lot of stories to tell. That’s why I always recommend first-time visitors try the History Trail Tour, which has a handy map you can download here.
As its name suggests, this tour will take you to the most iconic places of this marketplace. It will also show you the rich history surrounding this place and how it was able to thrive throughout the decades.
To make this experience even better, check out the nearby attractions like the Fremantle Prison and WA Maritime Museum. You’ll have a deeper understanding of the rich history of Fremantle after this!
Take an amazing photo of your iris
During your visit to Fremantle Markets, don’t miss the chance to have a unique keepsake made—a high-resolution photo of your iris! Iris Photo, located at stall 50, offers this fascinating service.
The entire process is quite simple. You’ll stand in front of a specialised camera for a few seconds while their staff snaps several detailed photos of your eyes.
Afterwards, you can choose your favourite photo to be further enhanced and customised. Once the enhancements are done, you’ll receive a high-quality print of your iris and a digital image to share on your social media pages.
Commission a beautiful illustration of your pets

Another way you can make your visit to Fremantle Markets a lot more memorable is by visiting stall 3A. Here you’ll find Catherine Scartaccini, a talented wildlife and pet portrait illustrator who’s been sketching animals since she was young.
To commission an illustration with Catherine, all you need to do is provide her with a clear photo of your pet. For the best results, use a photo that captures your pet’s unique features and personality.
She’ll need some time to create your pet’s portrait, but don’t worry if you can’t stay in Fremantle for long. She can arrange to have the finished artwork delivered to your address at no extra charge.
Where to Eat and Drink in Fremantle Markets
Acropolis Souvlaki

Stall number: Y104A
Since I’m almost always bound to go hungry during my shopping sprees here, I always stop by one of Fremantle Market’s many food stalls. One of those is Acropolis Souvlaki, a Greek-themed food spot that’s all about, well, delicious souvlakis.
Souvlaki is a dish that’s typically made up of grilled meat on a skewer. In most cases, it’s also wrapped in pita bread and features vegetables and tzatziki sauce to make it more flavourful.
Personally, I always get myself one of their delicious pork gyros. The tender marinated pork, combined with fresh tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki sauce, creates a blend of sweet and tangy flavours that’s great for a satisfying lunch.
Muffle

Stall number: Y9
If you’re a waffle lover like me, check out Muffle. This spot specialises in Asian-European fusion desserts that are quite different from the traditional waffles we all know and love.
One of the best things about Muffles is their use of Australian whole milk soft serve ice cream. This addition brings a creamy and rich texture to their desserts, which is great for those hot summer days.
My go-to order here is their signature Daifuku waffle. It has a soft, chewy mochi exterior encasing a sweet and creamy filling. This filling is a mouthwatering blend of strawberry slices, red bean paste, and mochi ice cream!
Bratwurst Bar

Whenever I’m craving authentic German sausages, I make sure to stop by Bratwurst Bar. This stall specialises in a variety of bratwursts, including pork and veal bratwurst, smoked beef Kransky, currywurst, and garlic bratwurst.
In my opinion, what makes the food here so good is that their ingredients are prepared fresh daily. They even have this massive cast iron frying pan they use to cook the sausages right in front of you.
Out of all the dishes I’ve tried here, their classic pork bratwurst is probably my favourite. It’s juicy and tender and pairs well with the tangy sauerkraut and soft, fresh bread roll.
Levi’s Doughnuts

Stall number: Y108a

Levi’s Doughnuts is another good food spot for those with a sweet tooth. This stall has been serving up handmade European-style doughnuts since 2008 and is one of my go-to places to get my doughnut fix.
The main reason I keep coming back here is that their doughnuts are always made fresh on-site daily. They have a good variety of flavours, including the three classic options: traditional style, blackberry jam-filled, and dark chocolate-filled.
If I could only choose one flavour, it would be their blackberry jam-filled doughnut. It’s warm and soft, with a generous amount of sweet and tangy blackberry jam inside. It’s a nice snack to enjoy while exploring the market.

If you’re looking for handcrafted woodwork and unique items, BanksiAlia Crafts is definitely worth a visit. Their products make great gifts or cool decorations for your home.
One thing I love about this place is that everything is made locally. They use Western Australian native seed pods, Mallee Burl timber, and olive wood, which all have amazing grain patterns.
During my visit here, I made sure to get myself one of their wood cutting boards. It has become a favourite in my kitchen because of its beautiful grain and how well it works.
Coffee Connection

Coffee Connection is one of my go-to spots whenever my coffee bean stash is running low. They’ve been a fixture in the markets for over 17 years and offer a diverse range of beans.
Here, you can choose from flavoured coffee, pure blends, and decaffeinated options. If you prefer to enjoy your coffee right away, they can brew a fresh cup for you on the spot.
By the way, I highly recommend signing up for their monthly coffee subscription. As a member, you get a 10% discount on their products and the convenience of having your coffee beans delivered straight to your door.
Mondo Nougat

Mondo Nougat, a famous Perth confectionary company, has a stall in Fremantle Markets! They offer a range of traditional Italian nougat, made using recipes that have been passed down through generations.
What’s great is that most of their products are available here, so you no longer need to travel to their factory in Herne Hill to check out their creations. This includes their award-winning varieties like pistachio nougat and honey soft nougat.
If this is your first time buying here, my personal recommendation is their Discovery Pack. It features 24 48-gramme nougat bars that include most of their flavours, including the two I mentioned earlier.
Paul’s Pins & Patches

For our readers who love to sew, make sure to stop by Paul’s Pins & Patches. This shop offers an extensive range of iron-on and sew-on patches, including designs like Australian football team logos, country flags, and cartoon characters.
Alongside these patches, they also have some metal pin badges on sale. You’ll also find Wayfarer sunglasses and stickers, so there’s almost always something interesting to check out.
During one of my visits, I was drawn in by their colourful display. I ended up buying a few patches to customise my new denim jacket. The quality of the patches is great, and they really add a unique touch to my jacket.
