Everything You Need to Know About Yanchep in Perth

As far as escapes and experiences go, Yanchep is no one-trick-pony.

To the west, the Indian Ocean brings attractions with a dash of salt. To the east, you can walk among koalas or explore caves.

There’s great grub as well! One minute you’re tearing into naans, the next, you’re sipping on a cuppa or chewing through a steak sandwich.

To really get a feel for Yanchep, though, you have to see, taste, and live it. This is just the guide you need to get started!

Where is Yanchep?

yanchep-perth-map

Yanchep is about 42 minutes or 53 kilometres northwest of the Perth CBD. It’s between Two Rocks to the northwest, the rural areas of Pinjar, Carabooda, and Eglinton to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the west.

What is the main street of Yanchep?

Yanchep doesn’t have a traditional main street, but Brazier Rd, Yanchep Beach Rd, and Peony Blvd are the closest thing to a ‘hub.’ These streets are where you’ll find most restos and attractions like the Yanchep National Park.

How to Get There

Closest Train Stop/Bus Station: Board the Yanchep line to reach Yanchep from the Perth CBD.

The fastest route stops at Yanchep Station. There, you must then board bus line 494 or ride a taxi heading to the suburb.

By Taxi: Perth taxi fares change depending on when you ride. The table below gives you a general idea of the costs.

Things to Do in Yanchep

Snorkel in Yanchep Lagoon

From john_o_85

Address: 5 Brazier Rd
Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours
Website

Yanchep Lagoon’s curved shape means it dodges the worst of elements, boosting its popularity among snorkelers and novice swimmers. Even better, the water is often stable and clear, maxing out at about 5 metres deep.

The 300-metre-long reef also does a top job of preventing big fish from lurking around. That means you’ll do laps with non-threatening marine life, mostly herring, whiting, and octopus.

If you’d rather not risk it, though, just dip on the southern end’s shallows, or cast a line outside the yellow and red flags.

Go deep into Crystal Cave

From paige.roberts98

Address: Yanchep
Operating Hours: Daily – 10 am to 3 pm
Website

Yanchep and Crystal Cave are pretty much synonymous at this point. Not a shocker, knowing it’s the only one open to the public out of the 400 other caves spread out across Yanchep National Park.

Of course, our spelunking-mad lot had to see it, and the stalagmites, flowstones, and stalactites didn’t disappoint. The 45-minute guided tour was also informative and without boring bits.

That said, you can still have a nosey on your own. The cave systems have 9 open trails for non-guided excursions.

Smell lavenders at the Yanchep Lavender Farm

Website

Yanchep Lavender Farm is the largest operating one in Perth!

There’s also other stuff to gawk at beyond the beautiful flowers. For instance, they’re one of the rare few that harvests and produces goods onsite, including lavender essential oils, soaps, and lotions.

The only snag is they only operate from April to November, and booking an appointment is a must.

Take on wetlands and greenery on the Ghosthouse Trail

From klouise_92

Estimated Time: 2 hrs 45 mins

Type: Circular
Difficulty: Moderate

We witnessed half of Yanchep National Park’s unfiltered beauty by taking the Ghosthouse Trail. Every step had its own little surprise, starting with the wetlands at Loch McNess that pulled our birdwatchers with its waterfowls.

Tuart woodlands and a hilly landscape followed. The latter gave us some of the park’s best-looking and thickest flora, like acacia and spring wildflowers.

The Ghost House, a ruined limestone building, was our walk’s star attraction. Some say a ghost lives there, but we fortunately didn’t stumble into it. First-class view, though.

Spot koalas along the Yanchep Koala Boardwalk

The name Yanchep Koala Boardwalk isn’t false advertising. When we popped by, the 240-metre boardwalk was crawling with the iconic Aussie marsupials, all chilling in their natural habitat.

Most of them were either having a kip or feasting on eucalyptus, as koalas often do. The best part is we got to see them do standard koala business without huffing, thanks to the elevated vantage point.

Smack dab between the Lagoon Foreshore and Yanchep National Park, Sun City Country Club dishes out knockout vistas with each round. Its 18-hole course leans on ground-level play, which is why golfers must be tactical rather than just hit long here.

A driving range, putting green, and chipping area are offered as well. These are ideal if your swing game is greener than the fairways, or if your wallet is a bit light.

Sleep amid the bushland at Henry White Oval

When we’re in Yanchep, we always pitch up at the purpose-built Henry White Oval. Walking up amongst banksia and tuart woodlands is hard to pass up.

We never had to cram like sardines too. The 10 grassed and 9 hardstand sites provide enough breathing space, and there’s also a group camping site for larger crews.

To top it off, the oval is a convenient base for bushwalkers. Post-hike, you can even have a BBQ in the sheltered picnic areas.

Our mates took to the skies at Treetops Adventure. The 70+ aerial courses were grip-tightening with 16 different zip lines, swinging nets, and unsteady wooden bridges.

As if gliding amongst trees wasn’t enough, we also had western grey kangaroos bouncing below. Some even scoped out tawny frogmouths during the 2.5-hour thrill sesh!

Yanchep Beach Lagoon Cafe has the suburb’s spirit written all over it. The decor is mellow, the grub is fuss-free, and the Indian Ocean is front and centre.

Bite-wise, we especially enjoyed the fish and chips. They weren’t grease bombs and rubbery, but the flavour still popped, made better by the thick-cut crisps.

The classic smoky bacon and runny eggs combo hit too, especially when followed up with cinnamon scrolls!

You’ll be spoilt for choice at Bombay Bustle Indian Restaurant. Their menu is stacked with Indian favourites—goat curry, saffron rice, rogan josh, you name it.

For us, though, their chicken madras is the must-try. The aromatic dish’s profile is dynamic, with notes running from tangy to fiery to sweet.

It gets better once you scoop it up with a fluffy naan, also one of this haunt’s best-sellers. Rightfully so, as it’s on-point with the garlicky and butter notes.

Good old-fashioned grub feeds and brews by the fire is what Yanchep Inn does best. Imagine having an aioli-drenched striploin steak sarnie washed with Coopers Draught or Guinness!

Seafood lovers won’t be left out too. The menu dishes out saffron-heavy seafood paella and some sweet Spring Bay black mussels fired up with chilli sauce.

The chic Bulrush has meals to match your appetite. If you come for a heavy brekkie, there’s a plate of hash browns and sausages for that craving.

Just after a light dinner? They grill a well-seasoned plate of barramundi. The mild fish goes well with Bulrush’s Greek salad dressed in balsamic.

Those gunning for heavy meals, though, should opt for their 160-gram rump steak. The beef is bold and elevated by sweet onions and gooey cheese.
