OPENING HOURS | Around June to July |
Perth’s winter season is when the weather is colder than a penguin’s fridge, yet the fun is hotter than a kangaroo’s pocket! If you want a continuous set of adventures, we recommend going to the Perth Winter Fest.
This event offers 4 weeks of outstanding activities. From unique art galleries and school break activities to fictitious snowfall in the malls and live ice carving, we think there’s something for everyone!
We also suggest enjoying more locations like the Winter Fest Playhouse at Forrest Place, admiring the winter lights and installations at Brookfield Place, and going ice skating at Elizabeth Quay, among many others.
Travel tip: Layering is key to dressing up in Perth during the winter. You should be prepared for anything from bright and mild to chilly and rainy weather because the weather can be erratic. |
There’s much to enjoy, so you better not freeze. You’ll swap your sunscreen for a scarf, flip-flops for fuzzy boots, and complaints about the heat for your best impressions of Olaf from Frozen.
Overall, we feel the Perth Winter Fest is a fantastic occasion to catch up with loved ones. When you get tired, take advantage of the cosy weather at a nearby cafe.
Watch a game at Optus Stadium

ADDRESS | 333 Victoria Park Dr, Burswood WA 6100, Australia |
WEBSITE | https://optusstadium.com.au/ |
CONTACT INFO | Phone: +61 1300 297 588 |
SOCIAL MEDIA | Facebook: OptusStadium Instagram: optusstadium Twitter: @OptusStadium |
Want to watch a sports game in Perth in the winter? We believe you can still enjoy the ultimate stadium experience – even when the temperature drops faster than the losing team’s morale.
For us, you should consider this a one-of-a-kind experience to go to the 60,000-seat Optus Stadium. Here, you’ll see some of the biggest sporting events (and sometimes, concerts).
But no matter who wins in the game of your choice, we think your temperament should be as cool as the weather. So, grab your thermos of hot cocoa, wear your favourite team scarf, and bring your sense of humour when going to the stadium.
Friendly tip: You’re permitted to bring your own food and beverages into Optus Stadium. So, we suggest preparing your lunch to save money on the pricey stadium concessions. |
It’s also smart to arrive at the stadium early to beat the crowds and prevent traffic jams and lengthy lines.
As for how to get to Optus Stadium, trains, buses, and boats are all convenient ways to get there. You may check the Transperth website for information on the routes and schedules.
But if you’re driving your car to the stadium, we recommend reserving a parking spot ahead of time. Parking spaces at Optus Stadium are plentiful, but they tend to get booked up fast on game days.
You may also take advantage of a tonne of pre- and post-game activities nearby. We feel you won’t run out of options because Burswood Precinct, the city centre, and Northbridge are all close to Optus Stadium.
Moreover, the Market Grounds, bars, pubs, and breweries will all be bustling with event attendees.

Looking to escape the winter blues and get up close and personal with some furry friends? Then, we recommend visiting the Perth Zoo!
Sure, it may be a bit chilly outside. But who needs warmth when you’ve got the warm, fuzzy feelings that come from hanging out with adorable animals?
More than 1,200 animals live in different areas at this zoo. We think you’ll likely pick a favourite among the kangaroos, koalas, giraffes, elephants, orangutans, and many others around here.
For us, booking a guided walk at Perth Zoo is an excellent way to elevate your experience. As you begin the trail, a volunteer will be there to provide details about the animals.
There are lots of great photo ops at the zoo, so don’t forget to bring a camera to capture all the priceless moments. You can request the volunteer to snap some pictures as well!
To avoid lines and save time, purchase your passes online ahead of time. You can also save money by taking advantage of internet discounts.
At the zoo, keep in mind that feeding the animals isn’t usually permitted. It’s important to follow their diets and instinctive behaviours.
Travel tip: If you insist on feeding the animals, you may avail of the 2-hour close encounter, where you may act as a zookeeper. You’ll be allowed to feed the animals, but only with food that the zoo has prepared. |

South Perth is a lovely location with lots of interesting things to see and do, like going along the foreshore. In our opinion, you can make the most of your time there by taking the ferry.
Our main advice is to wear warm apparel in the winter. Pack a jacket, scarf, and gloves to stay toasty on the ferry.
Winter weather can also cause changes to ferry schedules, so it’s best to check the schedule in advance to prevent any hassle.
Travel tip: Try to reserve a window seat in advance. This is where you can take in the scenery without interruptions. |
It’s also a good idea to bring a decent camera so you can take pictures of the beautiful scenery like a professional photographer.
We think anyone with eyes would see that the city skyline views from the ferry are too incredible to miss! Get your vision cleared from an eye specialist, so you can join in on the fun!
Plus, it’s always nice to see some fascinating animals. Look out for dolphins and other wildlife that might also show up in the river.
Also, if you want to warm up, we suggest getting a hot drink or snack from the café on the ferry.
Explore the Scitech Museum

Are you freezing your buns off outside? Don’t worry! We believe you can stay indoors while having some science fun at the Scitech museum.
Scitech provides a variety of entertaining scientific experiences. This involves its 6 interactive galleries, engaging performances, educational puppet shows, hands-on science lab, and Australasia’s largest planetarium.
In our opinion, both kids and kids at heart can happily explore this site!
Just remember that wintertime opening hours for Scitech may change, so be sure to consider the schedules of each activity or exhibition before visiting.
To avoid lines and save time, it’s smart to purchase your tickets in advance too. Scitech provides special online prices, so make the most of this deal.
Travel tip: If you feel like sitting down for a while, we recommend stopping by the café at Scitech to rest, dine, and recharge before continuing your exploration. |
When you have some spare time, you may also browse the Discovery Shop for some cute science souvenirs and gifts.

OPENING HOURS | Open 24 hours |
If you can brave the chilly winds, then exploring Elizabeth Quay during the winter may be another item to check off your bucket list.
This location is popular with tourists because it has fancy hotels, restaurants, and cafes with stunning views of the city and river. We also like that this district offers almost everything – from a casual stroll to an exciting water bike adventure.
Moreover, there are several public art works in Elizabeth Quay, including the well-known ‘Spanda’ sculpture. We think it can be therapeutic to look around and appreciate these pieces during your visit.
At Elizabeth Quay, there are also many cafes and restaurants where you can warm up with a hot beverage. We suggest seeing the new Winter Village at The Quay for some warm food and beverage.
But before leaving for Elizabeth Quay, it’s smart to check the weather forecast because Perth can experience heavy rain and strong winds during the winter.
Overall, we believe you can save money and escape crowds by visiting Elizabeth Quay in the winter, from June to November.
Travel tip: While you’re here, make time to see the whales too! This season is the ideal time to see humpback whales migrating annually. |
Chill at Subiaco

Don’t be fooled by Subiaco’s chilly winter temperatures – we believe this hip suburb can warm your heart with its lively atmosphere and hotspots!
Kings Park, one of the biggest inner-city parks in the world, is one of the best locations with its gardens in Subiaco. We recommend going for a stroll and taking in its breathtaking surroundings.
For those who love theatrical performances, the Regal Theatre and the Subiaco Arts Centre are two entertainment venues you might love. See their schedule in advance and attend a performance for an unforgettable experience!
And while you’re at it, you may also appreciate other artsy options. We think enthusiasts would love the Linton and Kay Galleries and the Gallery 360 for their contemporary art.
There are many cosy shops that we think are perfect for killing time as well. One of which is Architects and Heroes with their brunch fare, cakes, and artisan coffee.
Travel tip: Go to the Subi Farmers Market on a free Sunday! They provide a wide selection of foods, baked goods, and handcrafted items, so you’ll find some interesting trinkets while trying out some local cuisine. |
Shop at Perth Upmarket

ADDRESS | 35 Stirling Hwy, Crawley WA 6009, Australia |
WEBSITE | http://www.perthupmarket.com.au/ |
CONTACT INFO | Phone: +61 432 897 516 Email: [email protected] |

Who says markets are only for sunny days or the summertime? For us, the Perth Upmarket is an ideal shopping location, even when it’s a bit chilly.
Here, we think that you can help small creative businesses grow by buying their high-quality local goods.
More than 180 small shops, including artists, stylists, craftsmen, and gourmets, sell their items at each Upmarket event. This means various apparel, cupcakes, artwork, home goods, jewellery, skin care, gourmet cuisine, and paper goods would be available.
Of course, it’s best to know the exact dates of the winter market to make sure you don’t miss it. The Perth Upmarket is only held several times a year, and they update their website about these announcements.
Friendly tip: Bring plenty of cash with you to Perth Upmarket because many of the vendors may accept only one mode of payment. |
Also, bring a reusable bag to carry your purchases home, because Perth Upmarket aims to reduce waste.
Conveniently, parking and entry into the market are free as well, so the venue is easily accessible.
See the Art Gallery of WA

ADDRESS | Perth Cultural Centre, Perth WA 6000, Australia |
WEBSITE | https://artgallery.wa.gov.au/ |
CONTACT INFO | Phone: +61 8 9492 6600 Email: [email protected] |
SOCIAL MEDIA | Facebook: ArtGalleryWA Instagram: artgallerywa Twitter: @ArtGalleryWA |
OPENING HOURS | Monday, Wednesday – Sunday: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM |
Since many travellers ditch the beach during the colder seasons, we think among the good indoor alternatives is visiting the Art Gallery of WA (Western Australia).
For first-time guests, we suggest taking one of the many guided tours that the art gallery offers of its exhibitions.
Friendly tip: Winter temperatures in the museum can be chilly, so be sure to layer up your clothing for maximum comfort. |
There’s also a café on the property of the Art Gallery of Western Australia where you can relax, have dinner, or order hot beverages. Check out the gallery’s gift store for a variety of quirky presents and books too!
Although the gallery is open daily (except on Tuesdays), just keep in mind that some days have shorter hours.
And since the Art Gallery of WA is in the city’s cultural district, you may want to take some time to stroll around the neighbourhood. We recommend going to other local cultural landmarks like the State Theatre Centre and the Perth Cultural Centre.
And there you go! We hope you find the best things to do in Perth in the winter. May you have a fantastic time, even when you’re slightly freezing!
